When it comes to chronic pain conditions, there is perhaps no more confusing condition than fibromyalgia. This condition causes chronic, widespread musculoskeletal pain, with side effects including fatigue, poor quality sleep, issues with memory functionality, and mood swings. Researchers aren’t exactly sure what causes fibromyalgia, though the most common school of thought is that the condition is caused by repeated nerve stimulation that causes changes in the brain and spinal cord.

Diagnosing fibromyalgia is tricky: there is no blood test, X-ray, cat-scan, MRI, or other definitive tests that can provide an official diagnosis. Until recently, doctors would apply pressure to 18 different “tender points” on the body, though this has fallen out of fashion due to the changing nature of fibromyalgia symptoms, and uncertainty about whether the doctors were applying enough (or too much) pressure. Now, doctors tend to diagnose fibromyalgia after rheumatic, mental health, and neurological disorders have been ruled out.

Treating fibromyalgia is as confusing as diagnosing it. No one treatment has been a silver bullet for any one patient, and no two patients respond similarly to the same combination of treatments. However inconsistent, a combination of some of the following treatments generally reduces pain symptoms and increases the patient’s quality of life:

    • Over-the-counter pain relievers, like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen
    • Antidepressant medications
    • Muscle relaxers
    • Anti-seizure medications
    • Physical or occupational therapy
    • Talk therapy

That said, the National Institute of Health found that intravenous ketamine may offer effective, long-lasting relief from the pain associated with fibromyalgia. Depending on the length of the infusion, ketamine could relieve fibromyalgia symptoms for hours, days, or even weeks.
