World Mental Health Day was October 10, 2021, and one thing is certain, many people are struggling. The occurrences of individuals experiencing mental illness are staggering. From undue stress and anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and family conflicts, all of these issues have been exacerbated over the last 18 months due to the pandemic.

There may be times when you experience an emotional disruption, but these can quickly turn into more serious mental health issues if you do not have the right strategy to deal with them. Taking care of your mind is such an important aspect of your overall well-being. Fortunately, we have some useful habits that can help you improve your mental health and hopefully avoid a more serious mental illness.

1. Sleep
Sleep is very important because it allows your body and mind to reset. If you do not allow yourself to get enough rest, your mood can be affected, and your physical and mental well-being may deteriorate.

2. Eat Healthily
Eating healthy is not only beneficial for your physical health, but it can also have an impact on your mental health. Studies have shown that there is a connection between processed and sugary foods and depression. To be a more emotionally balanced person, it is a good idea to make sure you are giving your body the nutrition it needs.

3. Exercise
Exercise is tied to improved memory, emotional regulation, and learning. With just 10 minutes of movement a day, you can make a big impact on lifting your mood and helping to manage your emotions.

4. Relax
Over time, stress can build in your body and wreak havoc on your mental well-being. One of the best ways to combat this is by practicing relaxation techniques. This decreases stress levels, lowers blood pressure, and reduces muscle tension. Several different ways to achieve this are through: yoga, meditation, guided imagery, or breathing exercises.

5. Find a Hobby
Something we tend to do when we feel low is to stop enjoying the things that previously made us happy. Try taking small steps to spark your interest in a favorite hobby or activity. Or consider picking up an entirely new hobby. Whatever you decide, partaking in something that interests you gives you something to focus on positively.

If you are just experiencing the emotional highs and lows in life, you may not need to seek out help. These techniques and others may be enough to help you overcome your issues. However, if your symptoms are more severe, where they are affecting your daily life, it is best to reach out to a mental health professional. They will help to get a treatment plan tailored to your needs and help you get back on track.
